Alzheimer's & Parkinson's

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases: is there a relationship or different diseases?

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are representatives of a group of neurological diseases that occur most often in old age. Both types of pathological process appear for unknown reasons, are degenerative and affect approximately the same part of the brain.

Earlier scientists and specialists of medical practice put forward some theories which were the proof of interrelation of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Today, however, this opinion has been disproved; the pathology of the diseases is recognized as independent. However, there are some general points, of course. It is, first of all, the state of dementia, which lead to the development of senile dementia.

Do you need examinations for a differential diagnosis?

When cognitive symptoms (memory impairment, loss of intellectual abilities), headaches, dizziness, signs of mental disorders (depression, panic, anxiety, etc.) appear, it is necessary to visit a specialized medical center, where a full health examination will be conducted. This will allow you to get all the necessary data for the purpose of making a differential diagnosis.

Due to the fact that the initial forms of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are similar in their symptoms, it is important to get advice from a competent, well-versed in this issue and attentive doctor.

Distinctive features of dementia in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases

Despite claims that signs of dementia in both diseases are identical, the differences still exist. For example, dementia in Parkinson's disease is not characterized by such problems as:

- Aphasia (speech disorders, expressed in the inability to formulate thoughts with words and phrases, which were previously used).

- Apraxia (loss of ability to perform those actions that have been memorized and performed for years, while the possibility to perform these actions and motivation remain).

These signs are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease, which already distinguish the course of senile dementia that occurs in both diseases.

Signs of dementia in Parkinson's disease

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases have different places of localization of pathological process. Although they are located very close by, various clinical pictures of dementia confirms only the close presence of these sites with each other, and not a full-fledged neighborhood. Thus, dementia in Parkinson’s disease is characterized by the following features:

  • Bradyphrenia (slowness of speech functions, thinking, emotional reactions, etc.).
  • Total congestion.
  • Sign of depression, suppressed mood.

The treatment of dementia

Radical treatment of dementia has not been developed. Symptomatic and pathogenetic cure can only slow the progression of the disease. If dementia is secondary, the main disease should be treated: alcoholism, brain tumor, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's chorea, etc. If you have Alzheimer's disease, then cholinesterase inhibitors of central action and an excitatory neurotransmitter supplements should be used. However, if you suffer from vascular dementia, then antiatherosclerotic medications, low molecular weight peptides and free amino acids are used. Symptomatic therapy of dementia includes antidepressants, hypnotics, etc. An important role in the treatment of dementia is played by the disease prevention and properly organized patient care, regular training and attention to memory.hello
